This is a hard comic to review.  Not because there is anything wrong with the book.  Hell no.  Its an amazing finale to the Elite Saga.  Some great battles, some overcoming odds, and an ending that doesn’t go where you would think.  Plus there is an incredible splash page of Kiani that makes me want to earn more money so I can buy it.  Every single panel is just beautiful.  The story wraps up in a way that perfectly balances the fine line between resolution and leaving the plot open for the next volume.

However, as a (any day now) new father this issue is very tough to read.  There is the loss of a child, the quest to reunite, and …. the ending.  It is a tough tough thing to read.  Granted a year ago this would be a good book in my opinion, but that would be all.  Now that my life is about to change its that much tougher to read.  I can relate to the heart break.  I am right there in sympathy.  I hope that nothing bad ever happens to my child but if anything ever did, damn sure I could summon powers beyond my own strength in order to protect him.

Becoming a parent is one of the great before and after moments in life.  Everything about yourself changes.  There is not a doubt in my mind that one of the writers if not all of them is a parent.  The story of Aspen Matthews is 15 years old now and 15 years later there needs to be some growing up.  She has seen every tragedy and lived to tell the tale, but at what loss?

I’ve never seen a character brought so low and desired to see their rise that much more.  The next Fathom tale is going to be the most emotional story in the character’s lifetime.  All of it is thanks to the incredible work done in The Elite Saga.  If you love Aspen Comics as much as I do then hand over the last five issues to a new fan and get them instantly hooked.
